about

Longtime Superfreq associate David Scuba reunites with LA-based sonic explorers Dance Spirit for the first time since 2013’s “The Wi_th”.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Scoobs”, David Scuba is co-owner and resident for the Superfreq label and events along with the legend as Mr.C. A Los Angeleno by way of New York City, David has come into his own as a producer over the past few years with solo tracks, remixes and collaborations for Superfreq as well as Desert Hearts, Veryverywrongindeed, DJ Pierre’s AA Trax (now known as Jack Trax), Design Forms and others, all demonstrating that he has become a respected purveyor of darkened club beats that truly stand out in this globally oversaturated market.

The Californian production duo of Christopher Mohn and Reagan Denius have revolutionized themselves into Dance Spirit. Their love of heavy layering and deep rolling low ends deliver an addictive futuristic minimal techno vibe in their productions and live sets. Over the past few years, the pair have made some serious waves with their productions and remixes for such esteemed and hotly tipped new labels Get Physical, Mobilee, Kindisch, Akbal Music, and Manjumasi in just 2017 alone while their live sets have captured the dancefloor’s hearts and minds at events from Black Rock City starlets Desert Hearts, Damian Lazarus’ epic Get Lost, LA deep house icon Marques Wyatt’s DEEP and clubs like Fabric, La Santanera, Do Not Sit On The Furniture and others.

In their return to Superfreq, our tripped-out trio debuts a more developed sound; Dose represents a slight maturation in the sound of this collaboration, growing beyond the bass-heavy tech-house of David and Dance Spirit’s bass-heavy tech house of 2016’s three-track release for Desert Hearts, “Dust”.

Dose opens with a remix by Nitin of Toronto’s No.19 Music fame of “Prophecy”. Here, Nitin takes the tough techno original into new territory, completely changing the vibe to a slow rolling tech-house groover with its elastic drums, simple skanking bassline and dubbed out vocal and effects, creating a heady dancefloor gem.

Now prepare yourself for the real fun - two all-new original tracks of tough, moody techno and subtle gurgling acid. “Apotheosis” is a thumping techno tool with driving drums and percussion accentuated by a slowed down, phased out siren, breaking down into tribal drum fills and spacey effects before a big tom roll kicks it all back in to charge towards the end. “Prophecy” finishes off this new directional statement. A subtle acid techno driver, this captures the unique sound of Superfreq with its rolling analog bass heavy groove punctuated by a bubbling acid line – perfect for very late nights, dark rooms, and early mornings.
